【COLUMN∣JAMYANG 】Mind management is an essential skill for our times
By Khenpo Tengye
(Director of Thrangu Dharmakara)
The first session from the “Mind Management Seminar” series organized by Thrangu Dharmakara was held at Taipei’s WuEr Auditorium from 6pm to 9pm on October 18th in 2017. Many youth and adults from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan came together and listened to Khenpo Lhabu and Professor Huang Chung-Hsing share their views on managing the mind.
This interdisciplinary conversation between Buddhism and Business Management directly introduced the audience to the different aspects of mind and the means to manage it.
Taiwan is like a treasure island with honest and kind-hearted citizens. However, various recent disturbances have resulted in confusion and panic. The Dharma teachings of Thrangu Rinpoche and other ancient masters, published by Thrangu Dharmakara, can be used to help calm peoples’ minds. I would first like to point out that Thrangu Dharmakara was founded by Thrangu Rinpoche. Although getting on in years, Thrangu Rinpoche has continued promoting Buddhist education and practice throughout his entire life, establishing Sanghas, Shedras, and retreat centers in Nepal and India.
Twenty years ago, when I was eighteen years old, I remember receiving monastic ordination from Thrangu Rinpoche in Nepal. On that same day, I enrolled in the Shedra located in the mountains. At that time, Rinpoche encouraged me to make the virtuous aspiration to benefit others, to engage in studying Tibetan, and practice Buddhism in order to translate the teachings in the future. In 2009, we established Thrangu Dharmakara in Hong Kong and began to translate and publish Rinpoche’s collected works and teachings in a monthly magazine. Last month (September 2017), under Rinpoche’s guidance, Thrangu Dharmakara was officially established in Taiwan.
Knowing one’s mind, and learning how to manage it, is extremely important when doing practice. Thus, this “Mind Management Seminar” organized by Thrangu Dharmakara is not solely aimed at Buddhists; we also invite those who are interested in understanding the mind to come and participate. This is the first session of the series, and we will be broadcasting it live on the internet, after which we will edit the recording and share it with the public.
In this session, we are honored to invite two distinguished teachers. One is the retreat master of the Thrangu retreat center, Khenpo Karma Lhabu. Apart from his activities at the Thrangu retreat center, he leads retreats at various other retreat centres. His strict yet humorous demeanor inspires deep respect and fondness among his students. Retreatants from Thrangu retreat center, Nepal and Scotland speak about the immense benefits from his guidance, the result of his full dedication towards teaching the Dharma.
The other renowned speaker is Professor Huang Chung-Hsing, who received his doctorate in Business Management from the University of Texas at Austin. He subsequently served as Director of the EMBA program at National University of Taiwan (NTU). During his tenure, Professor Huang has helped numerous business professionals and senior managers, assisting them to discover opportunities during challenging times. He was a highly influential teacher to me, personally, and I learned a lot from him during my time at NTU. Before beginning the “Mind Management Seminar”, let me first offer my wishes for this event to be a complete success.
